A tragic incident on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa has claimed the life of 65-year-old Danny Clay Hartley after what authorities believe was a sudden medical emergency that led to a fatal crash Monday afternoon.
According to the Tuscaloosa Police Department, officers, along with the University of Alabama Police Department, responded at approximately 1:56 p.m. to the intersection of McCorvey Drive and Campus Drive West after receiving reports that a vehicle had struck a tree near Marr’s Spring.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the driver unresponsive inside the vehicle. Emergency personnel immediately began administering life-saving measures in an effort to revive him. Despite their efforts, Danny Clay Hartley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings from the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit indicate that the crash was likely not caused by external factors such as speeding or impairment. Instead, investigators believe Mr. Hartley experienced a sudden medical event just moments before the crash, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle and ultimately led to the collision.
Authorities emphasized that, at this stage of the investigation, there is no indication of foul play. The focus remains on confirming the exact medical cause through standard post-incident procedures.
The crash prompted a temporary disruption in the area as emergency crews worked the scene and investigators began documenting evidence. Members of the campus community were reminded of the unpredictable nature of such incidents and the importance of health awareness while operating vehicles.
Danny Clay Hartley’s passing has left a somber mood across the community, as friends, family, and those who knew him reflect on his life and the sudden nature of his death. While the investigation continues, officials have extended their condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.
Authorities say updates will be provided if additional information becomes available as the investigation progresses.
