Amy Lynn Jurrens Dies After Multi-Vehicle Crash During Blizzard on I-80 in Cass County

CASS COUNTY, Iowa — New details have been released following a deadly multi-vehicle crash that occurred during the powerful March 15 blizzard along Interstate 80 in Cass County, claiming the life of 54-year-old Amy Lynn Jurrens of George, Iowa.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 5:45 p.m. on westbound I-80 near mile marker 59, as severe winter weather created dangerous and rapidly deteriorating driving conditions. The blizzard, which brought heavy snow, strong winds, and reduced visibility, contributed to a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles.

Amy Lynn Jurrens was a passenger in a 2023 Jeep driven by 56-year-old Jerry Ray Jurrens, also of George, Iowa. Emergency responders transported her to Cass Health in Atlantic, where she later died from her injuries. Authorities confirmed that she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Jeep was not injured.

In addition to the Jeep, several other vehicles were involved in the crash, highlighting the widespread impact of the dangerous conditions on the interstate. Those vehicles included a 2024 Freightliner semi driven by a man from La Prairie, Quebec, Canada; a 2024 Peterbilt semi operated by a driver from Grand Prairie, Texas; and a 2019 Volvo truck driven by a man from Sacramento, California.

Also involved were multiple passenger vehicles, including a 2019 Chevrolet driven by a woman from Stryker, Ohio; a 2017 Dodge driven by a woman from Napoleon, Ohio; and a 2020 Nissan driven by a man from La Vista, Nebraska.

The crash is believed to have unfolded as visibility dropped and road conditions worsened, creating a hazardous environment for drivers traveling along the busy interstate. Multi-vehicle collisions are not uncommon during severe winter storms, particularly when sudden whiteout conditions and icy roadways make it difficult for drivers to react in time.

Emergency crews responded to the scene amid challenging weather conditions, working to assist those involved and clear the roadway. The incident caused significant disruption along I-80 as authorities worked to manage the aftermath of the crash.

The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the sequence of impacts and any additional contributing factors.

The loss of Amy Lynn Jurrens has left her family and community grieving, as her death underscores the dangers posed by extreme weather and winter travel. Officials continue to urge drivers to exercise caution during severe conditions, reduce speed, and avoid travel when visibility and road safety are compromised.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may be released as authorities continue their review of the crash.
