PEORIA, Ill. — Authorities have identified the victim in a deadly shooting that occurred late Wednesday night at a South Peoria gas station.
According to the Peoria Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:57 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to the 1000 block of Western Avenue after receiving a ShotSpotter alert indicating a single round had been fired. While officers were en route, they were informed that two individuals had been shot.
Police located a 23-year-old male at a nearby gas station suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. A second victim, a 19-year-old male, was found outside a nearby AutoZone with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Officers immediately began life-saving measures, but the 23-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
The Peoria County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased victim as Marnelius Alexander, 23, of Peoria. Coroner Jamie Harwood stated that an autopsy confirmed Alexander suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and died instantly. He was pronounced dead at approximately 11:45 p.m. at the scene. The shooting took place at the Phillips 66 gas station on Western Avenue.
The Peoria Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Crime Scene Unit (CSU), and patrol officers responded and continue to investigate the case. Authorities say the investigation remains active.
