Authorities have identified the victims as 81-year-old Dorothy Guinn of Pampa and 60-year-old Ester Everson of Amarillo, both of whom lost their lives in the devastating crash.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, just west of McLean near mile marker 140. Investigators say a Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by Dorothy Guinn, was traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of I-40. The vehicle then collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander driven by Ester Everson, resulting in a catastrophic impact.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, both women were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of their injuries.
