PORTERVILLE, Calif. — A Tulare County Sheriff’s Office deputy has died after being shot while assisting with an eviction service Thursday morning, prompting a large-scale manhunt and emergency response across the area.
According to Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, the incident occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. in the 1700 block of West Brian Avenue, near the intersection of Newcomb Street and Grand Avenue.
Officials said a confrontation took place during the eviction process, during which a deputy was struck by gunfire. Emergency personnel transported the injured deputy to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased.
Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as David Morales, continued firing at deputies during the incident before fleeing the scene, escalating the situation and triggering an extensive law enforcement response.
As a precaution, residents in the surrounding area were ordered to shelter in place, and multiple roadways were shut down. Nearby schools were also placed on lockdown, with officials urging parents not to attempt pickups until further notice.
Video from the scene showed emergency crews responding quickly as the area around Newcomb Street and Pioneer Avenue was secured by law enforcement.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, along with assisting agencies, continues an active search for Morales. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.
