OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK, WA – A serene afternoon at one of Washington State’s most iconic natural landmarks turned tragic on Monday, June 9th, when a young visitor, identified as Grant Herridge, suffered a fatal fall at Sol Duc Falls, a popular and picturesque destination within Olympic National Park.

The accident occurred shortly after 12:48 p.m., according to National Park Service officials. Witnesses at the scene reported that Grant, believed to be in his late teens or early twenties, lost his footing while attempting to cross a moss-covered rock near the center of the cascading falls. The rocks in the area, particularly during spring and early summer months, are known to be slick and treacherous due to mist and moss accumulation.

In a matter of seconds, a peaceful moment turned to panic as bystanders saw Grant slip and fall into the rushing water. Horrified witnesses recounted that he briefly resurfaced downstream after plunging over the nearly 50-foot cascade, but was quickly pulled beneath the swift, churning waters below. Despite immediate calls to 911 and attempts to locate him from the trail’s overlooks, he disappeared from view, sparking a multi-agency emergency response.

Search and rescue teams, including swift-water specialists and divers, were deployed to the area. However, the rugged terrain and powerful currents have made the search effort extremely difficult.
