In Loving Memory of Dereon James Robins and Mikhail-Lee Smith

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A deep sense of grief has settled over the Spartanburg community following a heartbreaking crash that claimed the lives of two children on Sunday afternoon, April 12, 2026.

Authorities say the tragedy unfolded around 12:15 p.m. at the intersection of Asheville Highway and Brock Street, when a vehicle struck two children riding bicycles. Both were rushed to Spartanburg Medical Center in critical condition.

According to Coroner Rusty Clevenger, the first victim, 12-year-old Dereon James Robins of Robin Circle in Spartanburg, was pronounced deceased at 1:26 p.m. after arriving at the emergency room. While officials were responding, they were notified of a second fatality connected to the same incident. The second child, 9-year-old Mikhail-Lee Smith, also of Robin Circle, later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash while in the operating room.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the collision as officials work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
