The Madison County, Illinois community is mourning the devastating loss of Madeleine I. Cissell, Ayden R. Hendrickson, and Paisley Nishwitz, three young lives tragically taken in a fatal house fire and series of explosions in rural Troy, Illinois, on Sunday, April 5, 2026. The heartbreaking incident has left families shattered, friends devastated, and an entire community struggling to come to terms with an unimaginable tragedy.
Authorities confirmed that the scene in Troy was extensively investigated by multiple agencies, including Madison County Sheriff’s Detectives, the Secretary of State Bomb Squad, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Madison County Coroner’s Office. Officers from the Troy Police Department responded to assist following the initial emergency call, while the Troy Fire Protection District provided continuous support throughout the investigation. The scale of the response reflects the seriousness and complexity of the incident.
Preliminary findings revealed that multiple explosions occurred inside the residence, resulting in a catastrophic fire that claimed three lives. Investigators determined that the initial explosion was caused by the mishandling of commercial-grade energetic material. The victims have now been formally identified. The first victim, Madeleine I. Cissell, an 18-year-old female from Troy, Illinois, was positively identified through dental examination. She was pronounced deceased at the scene at 1:10 a.m. on April 5, 2026, by Madison County Coroner’s Investigator Samuel Stone.
The second victim, Ayden R. Hendrickson, a 19-year-old male from Collinsville, Illinois, was also identified through dental examination. He was pronounced deceased at 1:15 a.m. on April 5, 2026, by Investigator Samuel Stone.
The third victim, Paisley Nishwitz, a 12-year-old female from Troy, Illinois, was identified through DNA testing. She was pronounced deceased at 2:03 a.m. on April 5, 2026, by Investigator Samuel Stone. The loss of a child has added an especially painful dimension to this already tragic event.
An autopsy was conducted on all three victims, with preliminary findings listing smoke inhalation as the cause of death in each case. Final cause-of-death determinations will be issued once toxicology testing is completed.
As the investigation continues, families are left grappling with overwhelming grief and unanswered questions.
