Jason Hoppel Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-99 in Blair County; Driver Critically Injured
BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. — A tragic wrong-way crash early Friday morning along Interstate 99 in Snyder Township has claimed the life of 50-year-old Jason Hoppel of Ebensburg, and left another driver in critical condition, according to authorities.
Officials say Jason Hoppel was killed when his vehicle was struck head-on by another vehicle that was traveling southbound in the northbound lane. Blair County Coroner Ray Benton confirmed that Hoppel was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 6:30 a.m.
The fatal collision occurred just before 6 a.m. along the northbound lanes of I-99 near the McCoy Street bridge, in the area of mile marker 48.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash involved a wrong-way driver who had been traveling in the incorrect direction for an undetermined distance before the collision. The driver responsible for traveling the wrong way was transported to UPMC Altoona, where they remain in critical condition.
Authorities continue working to determine where the wrong-way driver entered the highway and how far they may have traveled before the crash occurred. The investigation remains ongoing as troopers gather evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events.
The deadly incident caused significant disruption, forcing the closure of Interstate 99 for several hours. Northbound lanes were shut down between Exit 48 (PA 453 – Tyrone) and Exit 52 (PA 350 – Bald Eagle), with traffic being diverted while emergency crews responded and investigators processed the scene.
Earlier reports initially caused confusion regarding the identity of the wrong-way driver and the victim, but officials have since clarified that Jason Hoppel was not the wrong-way driver.
In response to the crash, state police are urging motorists to exercise caution, particularly during nighttime driving. Authorities advise drivers to remain in the right lane whenever possible, as wrong-way drivers often mistakenly enter highways via exit ramps and continue in what feels like the correct lane to them—typically the left lane for drivers traveling in the proper direction.
Police also recommend that if drivers encounter a wrong-way vehicle, they should slow down immediately, move to the shoulder if it is safe to do so, and call 911 with detailed location information. If a driver realizes they have entered a highway incorrectly, they are urged to pull over safely, turn on hazard lights, and contact emergency services right away.
The loss of Jason Hoppel has left a deep impact on his community in Ebensburg and beyond, serving as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with wrong-way driving. Pennsylvania State Police and the Blair County Coroner’s Office continue their investigation as they work to determine all factors involved in this tragic crash.
