NORTHFIELD, N.H. — The Northfield community is mourning the tragic loss of 27-year-old Megan L. Whiting, who was fatally shot in an officer-involved incident early Monday morning.
Authorities said police from the Northfield and Tilton Police Departments responded around 12:12 a.m. on April 6, 2026, to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at an apartment on 20 Vine Street. The caller reported that Whiting was assaulting another resident with a fire extinguisher, damaging property, and had broken a window.
When officers arrived within minutes, they encountered Whiting armed with a knife and in close proximity to an injured female resident. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the situation escalated, and an officer fatally shot Whiting. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the manner of death a homicide. No other civilians or officers were physically injured during the incident.
Whiting’s sudden death has left family, friends, and neighbors in shock, struggling to come to terms with the loss of a young life under such tragic circumstances. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, with the identity of the officer involved withheld pending formal interviews.
