Victim Identified in Deadly Carjacking and Crash Near Charleston and Decatur in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Clark County Coroner has identified the man who was killed in a deadly carjacking and crash that unfolded over the weekend near Charleston Boulevard and South Decatur Boulevard.

Authorities say 37-year-old Benito Saragosa was killed after a suspect stole a running vehicle from a Walmart parking lot and later crashed into a pole in the central Las Vegas Valley.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Saragosa was sleeping in the passenger seat of a black Hyundai while the vehicle was running in the parking lot of a Walmart near West Charleston Boulevard and South Decatur Boulevard. A family member had reportedly gone inside the store at the time.

Police said 55-year-old Harold Allen entered the vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed, with Saragosa still inside.

Investigators say the stolen vehicle then struck the rear of a silver minivan, causing it to spin out. The Hyundai continued northbound through the intersection of Essex and Charleston before hitting a large rock and a light pole.

Allen sustained minor injuries in the crash, while Saragosa suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the minivan suffered minor injuries, and the passenger was not injured.

Police said Saragosa and Allen are not believed to have known each other prior to the incident.

Allen was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on multiple charges, including open murder with a deadly weapon, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, and first-degree kidnapping. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.
