According to the Maryland State Police, the crash occurred around 10:13 p.m. on April 13, 2026, on the inner loop of I-495 near Maryland Route 704. Authorities say Smith was driving a BMW SUV when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a barrier, and became disabled along the highway.

Investigators report that a second vehicle, an Acura passenger car, attempted to avoid the disabled BMW but ultimately struck the barrier and then collided with the BMW. Despite emergency response efforts, Mijah Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a devastating loss that has deeply shaken those who knew and loved her.

The driver of the Acura was not injured, and lanes were temporarily closed for approximately two hours as troopers worked to investigate and document the crash scene.
