Elko, NV — April 14, 2026 — Authorities have identified those involved in a tragic and deeply disturbing incident at the Elko Regional Airport as Giovanni Perez and his son, Callan Perez. The incident, which unfolded on April 13, has left the community in shock and mourning as investigators continue to piece together the events that led to this heartbreaking loss.
According to the Elko Police Department, patrol officers were dispatched at approximately 12:38 p.m. to reports of an active shooter at the Elko Regional Airport. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, later identified as Giovanni Perez, deceased near the airline ticket counter.
Bystanders at the scene directed officers to a nearby restroom area within the airport. Inside, officers discovered a juvenile male, later identified as Callan Perez, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Fire and EMS personnel were immediately called to the location and began administering life-saving measures before transporting Callan to Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital for further treatment. Despite their efforts, Callan tragically succumbed to his injuries.
As the investigation unfolded, detectives learned that Giovanni and Callan Perez, a father and son, had been traveling together when their rental vehicle became disabled outside Winnemucca, Nevada. They were subsequently towed to Elko in order to secure another rental vehicle and continue their journey.
Authorities say both individuals entered the airport restroom and exited before returning a second time together. It was during this second entry, investigators believe, that Giovanni Perez shot his son for reasons that remain unknown. He then exited the restroom and fatally shot himself near the ticket counter.
Given the uncertainty surrounding the situation at the time and the limited information initially available, the Elko Bomb Squad was called in to examine the vehicle associated with the pair for any potential explosive devices. Officials later confirmed that no explosives were found.
The incident caused significant disruption at the airport, impacting both inbound and outbound flights. Officials have stated that the airport is expected to reopen in the afternoon of April 14 following the completion of investigative and safety procedures.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. The Elko Police Department has extended its deepest condolences to the family of Callan Perez, emphasizing that no family should ever have to endure such a devastating loss.
In light of this tragedy, officials are also urging anyone experiencing mental health challenges to seek help and support. Individuals are encouraged to contact a mental health professional or reach out to the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988, where trained counselors are available to provide assistance and support.
